Le conseil des ministres du vendredi 27 avril 2018 a convoqué le collège électoral le 29 juillet prochain pour l’élection du président de la République.  Avant la convocation du collège, les états-majors des partis politiques étaient déjà très mouvementés. La plupart d’entre eux avaient déjà choisi leur porte-étendard à l’élection présidentielle. S’il y a moins de doute sur la candidature du président sortant Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, le doute plane toujours sur quel parti politique portera sa candidature.

The state of emergency “should be lifted” and imprisoned journalists should be released ahead of the upcoming elections on June 24, the Turkish Journalists Association (TGC) said in a statement to mark World Press Freedom Day on May 3. 

“We have been considering the necessity of lifting the state of emergency, releasing journalists in jail, the return of fundamental rights and freedoms to the citizens for healthy elections,” it said.

The High State Council (HSC), under its new leader Khaled Mishri, has issued a reconciliatory statement to the House of Representatives (HoR) offering to meet in Tobruk in order to break Libya’s current political stalemate.

Referring to last week’s meeting in the Moroccan capital Rabat with HoR head Ageela Saleh, the HSC 7-point statement (dated 30 April but released yesterday), welcomed any direct meeting with HoR.

A few days after Parliament’s majority Egypt Support coalition announced its ambition to merge all the parties comprising the coalition into one unified party in order to “politically support the state”, the Wafd Party is seeking to form an opposition coalition inside the Parliament. 

Sources revealed that Wafd Party Chairman Bahaa el-Din Abu Shoka is discussing a suggestion to form an opposition coalition with a number of Parliament members. If formed, the coalition will be a sole rival to the pro-government Egypt Support coalition. 

A couple of days before Lebanon launches its general elections, Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq urged voters and candidates on Wednesday to “abide by the law” to ensure a smooth electoral process.

“Our responsibility is to watch ourselves, and to ensure a calm electoral process similar to the municipal elections. We must learn from the elections abroad,” said Mashnouq from Zahle Serail in Eastern Lebanon.

The Movement for Change stressed the need for observers and supervisors from the United Nations in the Iraqi elections to ensure that they are conducted in an impartial manner and to prevent violations and falsifications by political parties.
Omar al-Sayyid Ali, the General Coordinator of the Movement for Change said in a speech to the masses of the Movement: "The Movement for Change will achieve a sweeping victory in the upcoming elections at the level of the Kurdistan region, and will be a real representative of the citizens of the Region in Baghdad."
