MCA Deputy President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai on Tuesday denied allegations by 20 MCA Central Committee (CC) members that the MCA failed miserably in the 13th general election (GE13) because he failed to carry out his responsibilities as the chairman of MCA's GE13 committee.

Liow also refuted claims from the group that he had refused to withdraw the membership of Pulai Sebatang state assemblyman Datuk Tee Siew Keong who was offered a post of exco in Johor, resulting in an internal conflict in the party.

The party's failure in the GE13 was because the Chinese community had rejected the leadership of party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, he said at a press conference which was also attended by former MCA Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, MCA Wanita chief Datuk Yu Chok Tow and committee members Datuk Dr Hou Kok Chung, Lee Wei Kiat and Datuk Hoh Khai Mun.

Liow also claimed that Dr Chua made all decisions in the party without consulting him or other CC members.

"Whether it is the selection of candidates, finance, strategy or slogan for the GE13, were made by him (Dr Chua).

"There were winnable candidates in certain places but not in the candidates list for the GE13 and that was among factors for losing," he said.

On Monday, 20 central committee members petitioned for an EGM to censure Liow, among others due to his refusal to accept and respect the party's collective decisions, and for failing in his duties as chairman of the GE13 preparation committee.

Liow's action had provoked party infighting after the GE13 and tarnished the image of MCA, they claimed.

The other three resolutions concerned the party's stand on the acceptance of appointments by the Federal government, state governments and government-linked companies (GLC).
