Extremists can never understate the role of the Chinese and Indians in making Malaysia a better country, said an MCA central delegate from Bukit Mertajam.

Gui Guat Lye said Malaysians should not forget the sacrifices made by their ancestors in contributing to the country’s development.

“Extremists could ask us to return to China all they want but they cannot deny the role of our forefathers,” he said when debating the resolutions at the party’s 60th annual general meeting.

Petaling Jaya Utara delegate Ch’ng Soo Chau said MCA must exercise political wisdom when handling matters related to the Chinese community.

“Instead of acting harshly and independently, we should establish a consensus with the relevant Barisan Nasional component parties.

“With a collective agreement, we would be able to make our voice heard in the Government,” he said.

Kudat delegate Koo Tean Hua said MCA must step up its publicity endeavours to shield the party from attacks and accusations.

Koo also hoped the new leadership could visit Sabah more often and help solve longstanding woes involving water and electricity supply, education and the road system.

Kuala Terengganu delegate Yew Chin Meng said the constant swapping of leaders with new ones at the top should not be seen as the only method to rejuvenate the party.

Citing an analogy, Yew said the constant changing of the goalkeeper of a football team would not guarantee victory.

Meanwhile, central committee member Datuk Seri Lim Chin Fui said the same kind of intense campaigning by the hopefuls and their supporters during the MCA elections should be done for Barisan Nasional in the next general election.

He described the campaigners as “gung-ho”.

“I hope they could display a similar spirit in the next general election, when we face our real opponents ,” he said during the motion of thanks to the presidential address at the AGM yesterday.
