The Egyptian cabinet officially approved the final draft of a new presidential elections law on Thursday, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The State Council, a judicial advisory body, had been given the 59-article law last week and asked to review a variety of proposed amendments after President Adly Mansour put the document up for public debate and began fielding suggestions.

Mansour, who holds legislative powers in the absence of a sitting parliament, is expected to promulgate the law early next week.

Two possible articles have caused considerable public debate - a provision that could render the decisions of the presidential electoral committee immune to judicial appeal, and another which could restrict eligibility in presidential elections to candidates who are university graduates.

The old law dates from the era of president Hosni Mubarak, who allowed multi-candidate presidential elections for the first time in Egyptian history. It was amended ahead of the 2012 presidential ballot.
