KAJANG: The results of the polls show a positive sign for the MCA after gaining more Chinese votes in Kajang despite its defeat in the by-election, said MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

Chew, who was fielded as candidate for Barisan Nasional against PKR’s Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, said she was satisfied with the results as the Barisan Nasional managed to reduce its opponent’s majority compared to the last general election.

“It was a very tough fight and we are glad to see an improvement in the Chinese support from 18% in the last general election to 25%. Too me, it is considered a good result.

“We will have to work harder to prove to the people the party is their right choice,” she told reporters at the MCA’s main operation room.

Chew congratulated Dr Wan Azizah on her victory and urged the newly elected-representative to fulfil her promises to the people.

Chew added that her next plan was to focus on the party’s transformation efforts, including in the areas of community, education and political development, as well as her role as Penang MCA chief.

The by-election has proven the determination, talents and dedication of the party members — from veteran to the grassroots, she said.

Meanwhile, Wan Azizah said she would draw up a plan to fulfil her manifesto promised to the people, saying this was first thing that she would do as the elected representative of the Kajang people.

“We are pleased and happy with our sweet victory, especially due to the return of young voters and Malay support,” she told reporters after being declared the winner.

On the low turnout of voters and the reduced majority compared to the 2013 general election, she said “the 72.1% voter turnout is normal by international standards.”
