PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has set May 31 as polling day for the Teluk Intan by-election following the death of its MP Seah Leong Peng from cancer on May 1.

Nomination will be on May 19 while early voting is set for May 27.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof made the announcement after chairing a special meeting on the by-election at the commission's headquarters here on Thursday.

He said the hall of Sekolah Menengah Seri Perak in Jalan Changkat Jong, Teluk Intan, would be used for the nomination as well as the tallying of votes, adding that 36 polling centres would be set up.

Abdul Aziz said the 2013 electoral rolls gazetted on April 30 this year and updated as of May 1 would be used for the by-election.

According to the electoral rolls, Teluk Intan has 60,349 voters comprising 59,927 ordinary voters, 410 early voters and 12 absentee voters, he said.

"Going by racial breakdown, the constituency has 23,301 Malay voters, 25,310 Chinese voters and 11,468 Indian voters," he added.

Seah, 48, won the seat in the 2013 general election, polling 27,399 votes to beat Barisan Nasional's Mah Siew Keong (20,086) and Independent candidate K. Moralingam (279).

The late DAP MP was a three-term assemblyman for Pasir Bedamar since 1999.
