IPOH: Barisan Nasional has named Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong (pix) as the candidate for the Teluk Intan by-election on May 31.

The announcement was made by Barisan deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Saturday.

Muhyiddin said Mah, 53, had the experience and track record to serve the people well when given the chance.

He said Mah was a two-term Teluk Intan MP before he lost in the last two general elections.

"Win or lose, the spirit of Barisan Nasional is to continue to offer ourselves to serve the rakyat," he told  hundreds of people gathered at the Teluk Intan Resthouse here.

Also present were Barisan component party chiefs, including MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

DAP retained the seat in the general election last year after Seah Leong Peng beat Mah and independent candidate K. Moralingam with a 7,313 majority.

The seat fell vacant after Seah, 48, succumbed to cancer on May 1.

Nomination is set on May 19 and polling on May 31.

Of some 60,000 voters in the constituency, 41% are Chinese, 38% are Malays and 19% are Indians.
