TELUK INTAN: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has described the straight fight for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat on May 31 between Barisan Nasional and DAP as a “50-50 battle”.

Speaking to reporters after nomination for the by-election ended yesterday, Muhyiddin said the two-week campaign period would decide the outcome.

Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong will square off against DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, the political secretary of Gelang Patah MP and party adviser Lim Kit Siang, in the by-election on May 31.

Affirming that Barisan Nasional would use the campaign to go down to the ground to meet the people, Muhyiddin, said the party’s by-election machinery would explain and clarify all issues raised by the people and the Opposition.

“We hope the 60,000 voters here will give their support to Mah, based on his local knowledge and experience as a former MP and former deputy minister,” he said outside the nomination centre at SMK Seri Perak here.

Mah said he met Dyana during the nomination and told her there should be a fair fight with no political assassination involved.

“I told her to have a good campaign and not to use personal attacks.

“I also hope they won’t twist facts about what is happening here as I’ve been here for a long time,” he added.

Dyana said her candidacy was to continue the legacy left by her predecessor, the late Seah Leong Peng, who died due to cancer earlier this month.

“As a young candidate, I will face off against an experienced and well-respected figure,” she said.

“This a challenge I cannot back out from,” she added.
