Voters optimistic at Egypt's Wafd Party elections despite internal rift

Hundreds of Wafd Party members flocked to the party’s Cairo headquarters on Friday to cast their ballots in internal elections, amid an ongoing rift between the party head and prominent members.

 

The rift began earlier this month when at least 1,200 members of the right-of-centre party met in the Nile Delta governorate of Sharqiya, announcing that they were withdrawing their confidence in party head El-Sayed El-Badawi.

El-Badawi responded on the same day, suspending the membership of eight prominent members of the party’s high board.

In the latest in an internal political crisis rocking Egypt’s oldest liberal party, the Wafd Party, suspended board members have said they would not attend party leadership elections on Friday.

 

The party's leader El-Sayed El-Badawy, in whom they have withdrawn their confidence citing abuse of power, has said that the elections would go ahead and that the party’s board would then convene on Saturday to discuss the fate of the suspended members. El-Badawy added that the suspended members “are welcome again in the party.”

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met Wednesday with Al-Wafd Party leader El-Sayed El-Badawy along with other officials to discuss the latest crisis facing the party, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported

The internal political crisis rocking Egypt's oldest liberal party has been on the rise since late April.

Following the meeting with El-SIsi, El-Badawy told Al-Ahram Arabic news website that he will be meeting with the party's high board members to discuss El-Sisi's advice.

El ministro de Justicia de Egipto, Mahfuz Saber, ha presentado este lunes su dimisión, un día después de declarar que los hijos de las personas que recogen basura no deben ser jueces.

"Un juez debe venir de una clase social apropiada para el puesto, con todo el respeto hacia los recolectores de basura", dijo Saber durante una entrevista en la canal de noticias Ten. "Un juez tiene prestigio, por lo que debe contar con una ambiente y una economía respetables", añadió.

Close to 40 political parties are to meet on Thursday to discuss an ‎initiative aimed at unifying the Egyptian opposition's ‎positions on the country's election laws and ‎moving the country's long-delayed parliamentary ‎polls forward. ‎

In public statements on Monday night, Akmal ‎Qortam, chairman of the Conservatives Party, said ‎that participants at Thursday's meeting would recommend holding ‎workshops on the three election laws for three days. ‎‎

Egypt's Court of Cassation upheld on Monday a one-year suspended sentence against prominent human rights activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah, who was convicted of illegal assembly and "displaying force" during the presidential campaign of 2012.

 

Abdel-Fattah was accused in 2014, along with his sister Mona Seif and ten other defendants, of torching and robbing the headquarters of former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq , as well as illegal assembly, attacking persons and using violence.

Un tribunal egipcio condenó este sábado al expresidente Hosni Mubarak, expulsado del poder por una revuelta popular en 2011, y a sus dos hijos a tres años de cárcel por la malversación del equivalente de más de diez millones de euros. Mubarak ya había sido condenado a tres años de prisión en primera instancia pero la corte de casación había anulado en enero la sentencia y ordenado un nuevo juicio.

The internal political crisis rocking Egypt's oldest liberal party "Al-Wafd" continued to deepen this week, as eight suspended high board members called for a withdrawal of confidence in party leader El-Sayid El-Badawy.

 On Wednesday, El-Badawy failed to appear before the party's high board to answer questions in an internal investigation.

Ahmed Ouda, the head of the committee assigned to investigate members recently suspended by the party's high board said none of the eight attended the Wednesday meeting.

An Egyptian journalist was arrested early on Saturday from his home in the Nile Delta city of Behiera, his brother said.

Mahmoud Qaoud said police took his brother Ahmed, who works for the daily El-Dostour, and confiscated three laptops and three mobile phones.

Head of the freedoms committee at the press syndicate Khaled El-Belshy confirmed receiving a complaint from the journalist’s brother and said he would look into the needed procedures.

Ahmed is accused of participating in an illegal protest on Friday and joining the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

Nine political parties in Egypt launched on Sunday an initiative to draft a new parliamentary elections law in order to present it to President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, instead of the amended current law handed over by the cabinet.

The parties also announced that they were holding a three-day workshop in order to draft the parliamentary elections law that would include their suggestions which were ignored by the government, according to their statement.

The Egyptian cabinet’s drafting committee on Monday finished amending laws regulating parliamentary elections, Transitional Justice Minister Ibrahim El-Heneidy has said.

Amendments to the Parliamentary Elections Law and the Law of the Exercise of Political Rights were minimal, committee member Ali Awad said.

The Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) ruled parts of the laws unconstitutional on 1 March, hence postponing long-delayed parliamentary elections originally scheduled for late March.

Egypt's president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Monday said that the country would take two years to "get back on its feet", during Labour Day celebrations at Cairo's Police Academy.

 Egyptians should tell families, colleagues and neighbours to be patient and give the government two years to show positive results, he said.

The president added that every citizen should help the government to combat terrorism.

He said that efforts were ongoing to set minimum and maximum wages in Egypt.

El expresidente de Egipto Hosni Mubarak ha solicitado a la población que respalde al actual mandatario, Abdelfatá Al-Sisi, asegurando que éste tendrá que adoptar "decisiones fatídicas" para el país, según ha informado el diario egipcio Al Ahram.

Mubarak, que fue derrocado en febrero de 2011 tras 18 días de protestas populares contra su régimen, ha aplaudido la labor del Ejército, argumentando que las Fuerzas Armadas "comprenden la santidad del territorio nacional".

El ministro de Asuntos Parlamentarios de Egipto, Ibrahim el Heneidi, ha anunciado este miércoles que las elecciones parlamentarias no se celebrarán hasta la finalización del mes de Ramadán, que este año se celebra entre el 18 de junio y el 17 de julio.   

"Estamos de vuelta en la casilla de salida, y no esperamos que los comicios se celebren antes del mes sagrado del Ramadán", ha dicho, según ha informado el diario egipcio 'Al Ahram'.

El expresidente egipcio Mohamed Morsi ha sido condenado este martes por la mañana a una pena de 20 años de cárcel en el primero de los cinco procesos judiciales en los que ha sido imputado desde que fue depuesto en un golpe de Estado en verano del 2013. Morsi estaba acusado junto a una quincena de dirigentes de los Hermanos Musulmanes, el histórico movimiento islamista que venció en las elecciones libres, las posteriores a la revolución de 2011, de incitar al asesinato de manifestantes opositores durante su Gobierno.
