Abu Dhabi: Scores of the 341 candidates running in the Federal National Council (FNC) elections started their campaigns across the UAE yesterday (Tuesday), bidding to win one of the 20 seats available.

The other 20 seats of the UAE’s unicameral house will be filled by Their Highnesses the Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates.

The hopefuls were promoting their credentials through billboard and newspaper advertising and press conferences, with many of them embracing the trend by using social media networks including Facebook and Twitter.

ABU DHABI // The start of the campaigning for the Federal National Council elections has been postponed while mourning for the 45 servicemen killed in Yemen continues.

The 341 candidates’ official electioneering period was due to begin on Sunday, but will instead start on Wednesday, said the National Election Committee.

Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for the FNC and chairman of the NEC, offered his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers.

Women constitute 22 per cent of the total number of candidates for the Federal National Council (FNC) elections 2015, with 76 women contesting from across the country.

The final electoral list released by the National Election Committee on Monday has 341 nominees from an initial pool of 347.

The committee recorded appeal requests against three candidates - two from Sharjah and one from Abu Dhabi. After a review process, the two appeals in Sharjah were accepted, while the third was rejected.

The Emirates Human Rights Association (EHRA) has called for giving civil society organisations the right to monitor Federal National Council (FNC) elections.

Urging the National Election Committee to give civil society organisations an observer status, the association said it will ensure transparency, integrity and fairness of the electoral process.

The association said it is "looking forward to seeing an electoral process that ensures the right to political participation to achieve the objectives of the political empowerment programme in the UAE".

ABU DHABI // The call for more women to take part in the Federal National Council elections has been met with great response – they make up almost a quarter of the final list.

The National Election Commission announced 341 candidates, including five past members, are eligible to run for the council. Of these, 78 are women.

Three appeals against those standing were lodged with the NEC and two were upheld, removing an Abu Dhabi candidate and one from Ras Al Khaimah from the race.

ABU DHABI // The National Election Commission has been overwhelmed by applications – most of them from women – to volunteer for the FNC elections.

It is now training 1,400 volunteers from the 2,549 who applied after the offers were reviewed by a committee.

“It is great to see so many women taking part in the coming elections and having so many women volunteer in the organisation of the elections, especially as we embark on the first UAE Women’s Day,” said Ahlam Al Lamki, a director at the General Women’s Union.

ABU DHABI // Candidates for the Federal National Council will undergo a three-day workshop to prepare them for their upcoming election campaigns.

The workshops, run by the General Secretariat of the FNC, will include sessions on parliamentary knowledge and advice on how to organise their campaigns.

Abu Dhabi: With many former Federal National Council (FNC) members who won seats in the 2006 and 2011 elections contesting again, officials expect the FNC elections set for October 3 to be a very tight race.

“As the UAE confidently advances towards creating a more mature and securely institutionalised democracy, the Federal National Council elections 2015 will be a very tight race,” said Ahmad Bin Shabib Al Daheri, former deputy speaker of the FNC and member of the National Election Committee.

As many as 90 nominations, including 26 from women, were received by the National Election Committee on Thursday, the fifth and last day of the candidate registration process for the Federal National Council Elections 2015, taking the total number of registered candidates to 349.

The NEC will declare the preliminary list on August 23, and the final list on August 31. Candidates can request withdrawal not later than September 14.
