The ailing Democratic Party continued to reach out to non-party members this week, naming a 2014 presidential candidate selection committee of mostly outsiders in an effort to bolster popularity and distance itself from a series of high-profile graft cases that have tainted the party’s once clean image.

The committee consists of seventeen people — seven party members and ten independents — who are tasked with selecting the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. The group met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at his residence in Cikeas to begin the process on Monday.

Kalla Will Run in 2014 if ‘People Push for It’

Former Indonesian vice president Jusuf Kalla said he would run in the 2014 presidential election if “the people push for it,” on Friday.

“To move as a presidential candidate, there are requirements that must be met,” Kalla said. “If the people push for it, then I think I will be in solidarity with the nation.”

Kalla, who served as vice president from 2004 to 2009, was speaking to reporters during an Idul Fitri open house on Friday. The former Golkar Party chairman said Indonesia’s next president must be understand the issues facing the nation.

Senior Democratic Party politicians said that the party's presidential primary would have never been held if former chairman Anas Urbaningrum was not charged with corruption.

According to Melanie Leimena Suharly, deputy chairman of Democratic Party supervisory body, the party was set to nominate Anas to run in the 2014 presidential election.

“He [Anas] fits all the requirements for the nomination. But everything changed following the graft allegations against him,” Melanie told reporters at the House of Representatives on Friday.

Mahfud MD, the former Constitutional Court chief justice, remains the strongest presidential candidate for the National Awakening Party, according to party members who have refuted rumors that dangdut singer Rhoma Irama is likely to take the helm.

“Several figures have registered with the PKB [National Awakening Party] for presidential candidacy, but so far, Mahfud is still the strongest,” said PKB’s central executive board deputy chairman Daniel Johan in Pontianak on Thursday.

Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo is still the man to beat in next year’s presidential election, according to the results of a survey released on Wednesday, a day after another poll omitted him from consideration.

Joko, from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), was the candidate of choice for some 26 percent of the 1,200 respondents from 30 provinces covered in the United Data Center (PDB) poll.

Democratic Party chairman President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said his party’s presidential primary would be open to candidates from both inside and outside the party.

Yudhoyono also pledged the primary would be transparent in which the public would be expected to join the process. “People will be involved in the selection,” Yudhoyono said in his speech on Sunday evening.

Yudhoyono said the selection process for the candidates would run from September 2013 until April 2014.

House passes controverial mass organization bill

The House of Representatives has finally passed the controversial mass organization bill into law through a vote despite massive debates over the bill’s impact on democracy.

Kompas.com reported that 311 lawmakers supported the bill while 50 opposed it. The supporters comprised of 107 Democratic Party lawmakers, 75 from the Golkar Party, 62 from the   Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), 35 from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), 22 from the United Development Party (PPP) and 10 from the National Awakening Party (PKB).

Former Army chief of staff Gen (ret) Pramono Edhie Wibowo has finally announced his decision to join the Democratic Party. Pramono, who attended the party’s annual National Coordinating Meeting (Rakornas),

After struggling to hang on to its ministerial positions in President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Cabinet, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) appeared to have resigned to the possibility that at least one of its Cabinet ministers would be dismissed.

After days of tough talking to Yudhoyono — asking the President to kick the PKS out of the ruling coalition — PKS spokesperson Mardani Ali Sera said on Monday that the party would defer any final decision taken by the President.

Not only are political parties nominating more female candidates for the 2014 legislative election but some are placing 10 at the top of their candidate lists, a study has shown.

The Indonesian Parliament Watch (Formappi) found in its study that female legislative candidate numbers had hit an average of above 30 percent for each political party. Formappi based its study on data provided by the General Elections Commission (KPU).
