PC allocates 50 million dinars for the High National Elections Commission

The Presidential Council (PC) of the Government of National Accord has allocated 50 million dinars to the High National Elections Commission (HNEC).

The HNEC will spend the amount on implementing the presidential and legislative elections, scheduled to be held in December of next year.

Three political blocks in Libya insist: constitutional referendum must be held before the polls

The House of Representatives, the High Council of State, and the Constituent Drafting Body have reiterated that the draft constitution is now in the hands of the Libyan people, who have the sole right to accept or reject it through a public referendum.

In a joint statement, the three blocks demanded the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to adhere to its mission by supporting the constitutional process and help clear the way for holding the constitutional referendum, which would lead to a permanent constitutional stage.

The Acting Head of the UN mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams said on Friday that the participants of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), which is being held in Tunisia, have agreed to hold constitutionally-based elections on 24 December 2021.

“December 24 is Libyan Independence Day, a very important day for Libyans but it will also be a critical day in the history of Libya”, Williams said in a press conference, adding that “it will be a time, on which the Libyans can democratically elect their leaders and renew the legitimacy of their institutions.”

The High Council of State dialogue committee held a meeting on Monday in the capital to discuss the political dialogue expected to kick off on Nov.9 in the Tunisian capital. The committee reviewed items expected to be discussed, the mechanism of decision making, competence and the authorities expected to be delegated to the restructured executive authority.

African Commission welcomes signing of Ceasefire Agreement in Libya

The African Union Commission has welcomed the signing of a lasting ceasefire agreement by the Libyan parties at the end of the 5+5 Military Committee meetings in Geneva on Friday. The AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki called on parties to the agreement to honour this important development both in letter and spirit, indicating that the Libyan people deserves permanent peace, to start a process of reconciliation and peace-building in the country.

 

The Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections announces the opening of the nomination for municipal councils of several areas

The Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections has announced the opening of candidates for municipal councils in Tripoli and the Zawia West. The Committee has set the date for submission of candidacies for those wishing to apply starting on Sunday, October 25, 2020 and closing on Sunday, November 8, 2020. The committee also announced the opening of the nomination for those wishing to run in the municipalities of Sabratha, Al - Rujban, Qarabolli and Qasar Akhyar on October 25, 2020, to close on November 3. The committee said the receipt of the nomination files starts at 9:00 a.m.

Mayors of Western Libyan municipalities stress need to speed up Parliamentary Elections on constitutional basis.

Mayors of the western Libyan Municipalities and the Gabal 'mountain' region have called for elections to be held promptly on constitutional basis. The mayors said, at a meeting held here and attended by Mohamed Emary Zayed Member of Presidency Council and representatives of Workers Union and civil society organisations that they put the interests of homeland first and support the President of HNEC statements that parliamentary elections can be held within 120 days on constitutional platform based on the constitutional declaration.

Algerian President: Solution of Libya's crisis lies in elections, attempts otherwise waste of time.

Algerian President Abdel Mdjid Tebbounde said solution to Libyan crisis is through elections and anything otherwise is a waste of time, Tebboune said in a televised interview his country was continuing its efforts to bring about a political solution in Libya, saying this will only be realized by elections which can produce sovereign institutions away from international struggles. The Algerian President has stressed in press statements the need for elections to be held in Libya, indicating that the crisis has aggravated in the neighbouring country because of lack of institutions.

Germany has confirmed that the head of the internationally recognized Libyan government based in Tripoli, Faiez Serraj, and the head of the mainly eastern-based Libyan National Army, Khalifa Hafter, have been invited to the 19 January Berlin conference on Libya.

The USA, Russia, China, France, UK, Italy, Germany, Turkey, UAE, Republic of Congo, Egypt and Algeria, as well as the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union and Arab League – have all been invited.

Libya's Sarraj calls for elections in 2019 to end war

The head of Libya's UN-supported government on Sunday proposed holding nationwide elections to end the war in the North African country, as the forces of the rival military commander Khalifa Haftar continue their two-month-long battle to take the capital, Tripoli.

Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj told a news conference in Tripoli, the seat of his administration, that he is proposing a "Libyan forum" aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the conflict. The talks would draw up a roadmap for parliamentary and presidential elections to be held before the end of 2019.

Hafter rejects Macron call for unconditional ceasefire

Libyan National Army (LNA) commander, Khalifa Haftar, rejected calls for a ceasefire in the Tripoli fighting during his talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris yesterday. Hafter was reported to have said that he was willing to negotiate a ceasefire ‘‘if certain conditions are met’’. These conditions were not made public.
 

PC member Kajman hails outcomes of current municipal elections

This came during his meeting with the head of the Central Committee for Local Government Elections, Salem Bin Tahia to view the workflow of the electoral process.

Polling stations of seven municipalities end local government elections

The Central Committee for the Municipal Councils Elections closed the polling stations in seven municipalities that held local elections, after the end of the voting process at six o'clock yesterday evening.

The turnout in the seven municipalities until the closing of the ballot boxes amounted to 41%, with Al-Shuwairf Municipality registering the highest record with 67%, while the Municipality of Al-Qarada witnessed the lowest participation rate of 33%, according to Central Committee for the Municipal Councils Elections on Facebook.
