A number of National Dialogue Conference representatives filed a petition against Sheikh Ali Abdi Rabbo Awadi, to see his membership revoked based on his alleged cover up of Khaled Mohammed al-Khatib and Hassan Jaafar Aman' s murder in May by the hand of his fellow tribesmen.
According to police reports both Khaled Mohammed al-Khatib and Hassan Jaafar Aman were gunned down by men belonging to Sheilh Awadi's clan, whom claimed activists and politicians immediately intervened in their favor by sheltering them from the authorities, thus preventing their arrest.
A high ranking leader of al-Islah, Yemen Sunni political faction, Sheikh Awadi is also a member of the NDC and a powerful tribal lord.
Although the Sheikh issued a press statement in May, clearly distancing himself from the incident, rejecting claims he had helped the guilty parties evade the law by using his political influence and tribal privileges, activists have continued to campaign against him, calling on President Abdo Rabbo Manour Hadi to take harsh measures.
"The killers are known from the security forces ... It is not our responsibility [the tribe or al-Islah] to prosecute," said Sheikh Awadi on May 30.
Determined to see justice served, representatives of the NDC now say they will continue to campaign on behalf of the victims' families, warning of the matter will escalate should the state chose to ignore their calls.
NDC representatives already suspended all sessions for a day back in May in condemnation of the state's failure to apprehend the criminals.
Sheikh Awadi' supporters condemned the move, noting that activists and NDC representatives should re-direct their anger toward the state, and not a single individual.
