President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi has mediated a month-and-a-half-long dispute between the General People’s Congress (GPC) and the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) that led to the boycott of Parliament sessions by the JMP.

With a majority in Parliament, the GPC has been able to pass legislation without the support or presence of the JMP. The JMP insists that decisions should be made according to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Initiative and its implementation mechanism, not by majority vote.

State-run Saba News Agency reported that President Hadi held an urgent meeting in the presidential palace Saturday with Parliament members and government ministers to resolve the dispute.

President Hadi cancelled Parliament’s summoning of ministers for questioning. He warned against the destabilizing of the country’s political scene.

“Parliament and government should be working as one team, and not in favor of a particular person or party,” he said.

President Hadi pointed out that Parliament and the cabinet drew their legitimacy from the GCC initiative and two UN Security Council resolutions issued in October 2011 and June 2012.

Hadi called on the political factions to be, “objective in their performance and [to] prioritize the interest of the nation so that Yemen may escape its current crisis.”

Zaid Al-Shami, a member of Parliament affiliated with Islah, told the Yemen Times that the JMP welcomed the outcome of the meeting and said that an agreement had been reached that all Parliamentary decrees will be based on reconciliation.

When issues are in dispute, the issue will be referred to the president as stipulated by the GCC Initiative, Al-Shami said.

JMP and the GPC have fully reconciled, according to a statement on Parliament’s website.

GPC-affiliated Parliament member, Ahmed Al-Khawlani, said that the Sunday session went according-to-plan and that the summoning of the five ministers had been withdrawn based on the orders of President Hadi.
