Sabahi's campaign spent less than EGP 100,000 - Interview

The presidential campaign for leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi has spent much less than 100 thousand Egyptian pounds, Madeeha Zaki, campaign director, told Aswat Masriya on Tuesday. 

"The funds in the campaign's bank account did not exceed 200 Egypt pounds so far, as the campaign has not received any donations from businessmen," Zaki explained.

In contrast, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's campaign has spent 12 million Egyptian pounds until now, according to Tarek Nour, the campaign's coordinator and chief advisor.

The official campaign for presidential contender Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has spent only 12 million Egyptian pounds so far, Tarek Nour, the campaign's coordinator and chief advisor told Aswat Masriya on Sunday. 

Nour said that six million were spent on TV and radio commercials, billboards, posters and printed advertisement and the other six million was spent on conferences. 

"Some companies would cut the prices when they know that the advertisement is in favour of Sisi," he explained.

La Unión Europea (UE) anunció hoy que "finalmente" ha recibido la autorización de Egipto para desplegar el material que necesitan sus observadores electorales y aseguró que su intención sigue siendo supervisar los comicios presidenciales del 26 y 27 de mayo en El Cairo y fuera de la capital.

Esta declaración se produce después de que los Veintiocho anunciasen este domingo que su misión tendría que limitarse a la capital por problemas administrativos que impidieron el despliegue a tiempo del material que necesitan los observadores para desempeñar su función.

La Unión Europea (UE) expresó hoy que finalmente mantendrá su misión observación al completo para las elecciones presidenciales egipcias, pese al reciente anuncio de que limitaba su evaluación debido a los obstáculos para desplegar a tiempo a los expertos.

En una rueda de prensa en El Cairo, el jefe de la misión de observadores, el eurodiputado Mario David, explicó que el retraso en el despliegue de unos 30 expertos se debió a problemas "administrativos y burocráticos", pero que esto "no pone en peligro" la validez de la misión.

EU says will monitor Egypt vote after impounded kit released

The European Union (EU) said on Monday it would monitor all of Egypt's presidential election, reversing a decision to scale back its operations after authorities agreed to release a load of impounded equipment.

The bloc had said two days earlier its officials would only be able to watch voting in the capital as vital communications and medical gear was being held up in the airport.

"We are going to be spread all over the country," EU Chief Observer Mario David told reporters on Monday.

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was born on November 19, 1954 in the ancient district of Al-Gamaliya where his father owns a small business. 

 

He is married and has three sons and one daughter. 

 

Sisi graduated from the Egyptian Military Academy in 1977 before taking a General Command and Staff Course at the Egyptian Command and Staff College in 1987. 

 

In 1992, the former army chief took a General Command and Staff Course at the Joint Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom.

Less than two weeks before presidential elections kick off in Egypt, activists on social media are mocking the two competing candidates, former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, via hashtags*. 

“Every citizen taking a minibus to work should let his fellow citizen sit on his lap. This way the minibus will take [double] the passengers - imagine then how much diesel will be saved,” one user joked.

Iraq's Maliki 'set to win elections'

The coalition led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's won the most seats in Iraq's parliamentary elections last month, boosting his chances for a third term in office, election officials said.

Monday’s results from the election commission showed Maliki's State of Law alliance garnered 92 out of 328 parliamentary seats, with the incumbent himself winning more than 721,000 personal votes.

Both were by far the highest such figures from the April 30 election.

Next Egyptian parliament to have 630 seats

The incoming Egyptian parliament will consist of 630 members, up from 454 members in the 2012 parliament elected under ousted president Mohamed Morsi, legal committee spokesman Mohamed Fawzy announced Sunday.

The legal committee was created by Interim President Adly Mansour via presidential decree on 14 April to amend laws in preparation for the coming parliamentary elections, including the Political Participation Law.

Egyptian presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi spoke to Egyptian expat voters on Monday via videoconference, Al-Ahram's Arabic website reported.

Egyptian expats are the first to cast their ballots worldwide in Egyptian embassies from 15 to 18 May.

"We ask the Egyptians abroad to participate in future policies," he said.

Videoconferencing is a new technique to be used in Egyptian elections.
