On first day of UAE registrations, 14 of 102 set to run for council elections are women

Around 102 members of the UAE's Electoral Committees seeking to run for the Federal National Council Elections 2015 submitted their nominations when Registration Centres opened for the first time on Sunday.

The first day nominations included 14 female candidates. Of the nine registration centres, 24 nominations were made in Abu Dhabi, including two by women. In Dubai, six women registered to run in the elections.

Dubai: Candidates continued to nominate themselves in large numbers on day two of the nominations for the Federal National Council (FNC) elections on Monday.

In Sharjah, eight members registered for the candidacy, including a woman, while in Ajman seven people signed in for the nominations.

Aisha Mutawa Al Suwaidi, Principal of Al Manar Model School in Sharjah, thanked the Rulers of the country for giving her this wonderful opportunity, following the registration of her candidature at the Sharjah Consultative Council.

Registration begins today for candidates hoping to run in the Federal National Council's 2015 elections. The National Election Committee has set up registration centres in all seven Emirates. In Dubai, registration will be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The centres will remain open until Thursday, August 20.

Registration is open to any member of the UAE's 224,279 member electoral college, which includes 53,568 members from Dubai, 90,408 from Abu Dhabi, 27,455 from Ras Al Khaimah, 31,766 from Sharjah, 10,887 from Fujairah, 6,090 from Ajman and 4,105 from Umm Al Quwain.

ABU DHABI // The Federal National Council elections will be a politically empowering, unifying process for the whole country, says the chairman of the organising body.

“Any development that a country goes through needs to be a complete one and the political process is one of those essential components,” said Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for FNC Affairs and chairman of the National Election Commission.

Dr Gargash addressed a group of military officers and policemen on the October 3 elections, at the Armed Forces Officers Club on Wednesday.

SHARJAH // Sectarianism and intolerance have no place in campaigns for the Federal National Council polls, the head of Sharjah’s election organising body has said.

Mansour bin Nassar, head of the emirate’s National Election Committee, said candidates should get their messages across in advertisements and posters without being offensive or disrespectful of social values.

“Every candidate has the right to promote himself freely provided that he adheres to values and community principles,” said Mr bin Nassar, at a meeting with Sharjah Municipality.

ABU DHABI // Registration centres for the Federal National Council elections in October are ready and waiting for candidates to arrive this month.

The registration process will begin on August 16 and run until August 20.

Candidates must be at least 25 years old on election day on October 3, literate and a citizen of the emirate they live in, and have a certificate of good conduct.

Nearly 225,000 Emiratis are eligible to vote or stand as candidates, compared with 135,308 at the last election in 2011. More than two thirds are under 40, and nearly half are women.

DUBAI // Emiratis are being called upon to participate in this year’s Federal National Council elections by volunteering at polling stations.

The National Election Committee (NEC) wants as many people as possible to get involved in this third FNC election, which will be, by far, the biggest yet.

With the help of the Higher Colleges of Technology, the NEC has tailored a training programme that nationals must complete if they are to qualify as volunteers helping out in the country’s elections.

Last month, a National Election Committee official warned against illegal practices ahead of the upcoming Federal National Council elections.

These include racial intolerance, buying votes by way of gifts and promises and exaggerations in campaigns that may lead to slander and insults, according to Al Ittihad, The National’s Arabic-language sister newspaper.

There was no official acknowledgement of any breaches during the previous election, in 2011.
